Holy Cross Church, Chiseldon,
Millennium Window
To commemorate the end of the second Christian Millennium and the beginning of the third, a new stained glass window has been installed in Chiseldon's historic parish church, the Church of the Holy Cross (established in 903 AD).
With a bold use of colour and sweeping lines, the new window incorporates a series of twelve 'icons', of which four represent significant events relating to the life and ministry of Jesus Christ (The Annunciation to Mary; The Calling of the Disciples; The Last Supper; and the Crucifixion) and eight illustrate events of particular importance in the life and growth of the Christian Church (The First Century Conversion of St Paul; The Fourth Century Conversion of the Emperor Constantine, the first Christian Emperor of Rome; The Sixth Century Arrival in England of St Augustine, first Archbishop of Canterbury; The Tenth Century Founding of Holy Cross Church in Chiseldon; The Fifteenth Century First Mechanical Printing of the Bible by Johann Gutenberg; The Sixteenth Century English Reformation; The Seventeenth Century Book of Common Prayer; and The Twentieth Century Ordination of Women to the Priesthood).
The window was dedicated on Sunday 7th January 2001 by the Right Reverend Peter Hullah, Bishop of Ramsbury.
