Surrounded by garden plants, the topmost panel shows a cat, squirrel and a leveret. This recalls two stories recorded by Gilbert White, in one of which a cat adopted a suckling hare and another which tells of a family of squirrels nurtured by a cat.
The insects and amphibians of the central panel include the Hampshire natterjack toad and also the wild strawberries, which the local schoolchildren picked for Gilbert to make into jam.
The wild mammals depicted in the bottom panel shows a stoat, a long-eared bat and also includes a family of harvest mice which were first identified as a separate species by Gilbert White.
The Gilbert White Memorial Window, St Mary’s Church, Selborne, Hampshire.
Commemorating the bicentenary of the death of the writer and naturalist Gilbert White, this window was commissioned in 1993 and dedicated by the Rt. Rev. Colin James, Bishop of Winchester. This was an unusual commission in that each piece was paid for by individual sponsors. Many of the contributions came from the local congregation, schools and admirers of Gilbert White's work, including the Duke Of Edinburgh on behalf of the World Wildlife Fund.
The windows depicting the flora and fauna of the Selborne area celebrated in Gilbert White's book 'The Natural History of Selborne' are a unique tribute to his work.
Featured in several international magazines and books, it has been described as
“One of the loveliest of 20th Century windows....”
Simon Jenkins, ‘England’s Thousand Best Churches.’
